About the Role
We’re looking for a Trading Systems Engineer to build and support the technology behind live financial trading. You’ll develop backend services that handle orders, connect to brokers and exchanges, and process market data in real time.
This role puts you close to the trading process. You’ll work directly with traders in New York to understand their needs, improve execution workflows, and solve problems that affect daily trading.
You’ll also help develop order and execution management systems as the trading platform grows.
What You’ll Work On
Trading and Execution Systems
- Build backend services that support live order execution.
- Develop and improve order management and execution management systems (OMS/EMS).
- Connect trading applications with brokers and exchanges.
- Support trading workflows across equities, futures, and options.
- Handle order updates, executions, and trade status changes.
- Improve how trading systems process events and maintain accurate state.
Market Data and Trade Processing
- Integrate real-time market data feeds into trading applications.
- Maintain reference data used to identify securities and instruments.
- Support order routing and the full trade lifecycle.
- Work with FIX messaging and exchange connectivity.
- Build services that support trade allocation and settlement workflows.
- Investigate data quality issues and inconsistent trading records.
System Reliability and Performance
- Keep trading applications stable throughout the market day.
- Monitor system health and investigate production issues.
- Identify failures involving event ordering, message replay, and distributed state.
- Improve logging and monitoring to make problems easier to diagnose.
- Design recovery processes for partial failures and interrupted workflows.
- Take ownership of services from development through production support.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Backend Engineering Experience
- 5 to 10 years of experience building and supporting production backend systems.
- Meaningful experience with trading, execution, or market data infrastructure.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems and event-driven architecture.
- Experience diagnosing complex production failures.
- Ability to build reliable services that handle real-time events.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and sound technical judgment.
Trading Technology Knowledge
- Market structure: Understanding of equities, futures, and options markets.
- Order lifecycle: Knowledge of order types, routing, execution, and trade status.
- FIX protocol: Familiarity with trading messages and execution workflows.
- Trade processing: Understanding of allocations and settlement after execution.
- Distributed systems: Experience with event ordering, replay, partial failures, and state consistency.
- Production support: Ability to investigate issues while trading systems are active.
Programming Languages and Infrastructure
The current engineering environment includes:
- Python 3.12: Backend application development.
- gRPC and Protocol Buffers: Communication between services.
- Redpanda and Kafka: Event streaming and message processing.
- PostgreSQL: Database storage and application data.
- Kubernetes: Container orchestration and service deployment.
- AWS: Cloud infrastructure and application hosting.
You don’t need experience with every technology listed. Strong backend engineering skills and experience solving trading infrastructure problems are more important.
Additional Experience That Helps
The following background would be valuable:
- OMS/EMS development: Building order management or execution management platforms.
- Commercial trading systems: Experience integrating FlexTrade, Bloomberg EMSX, Charles River, or Enfusion.
- Market data: Working with real-time feeds and market data distribution.
- Reference data: Managing security identifiers and instrument information.
- Financial services: Experience at a hedge fund, asset manager, investment bank, or market maker.
Working Environment
This position is based in New York, New York. You’ll work closely with traders and engineers responsible for live execution systems.
Trading infrastructure requires careful engineering. A missed event, incorrect order state, or delayed system response can affect trading activity. You’ll need to understand these risks and build software that handles them reliably.
What to Expect
- Direct trader interaction: Work with the people who use your systems every day.
- Technical ownership: Build, monitor, and maintain the services you develop.
- Real-time systems: Solve problems involving orders, market data, and event processing.
- Platform development: Help expand internal trading and execution capabilities.
- Production responsibility: Investigate issues and keep critical services running.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This Trading Systems Engineer role offers the chance to work on software that directly supports investment and trading decisions. You’ll help build the systems that move orders from trading applications to the market.
- Develop trading infrastructure used in live financial markets.
- Work on OMS/EMS platforms and broker connectivity.
- Build event-driven services using modern backend technologies.
- Collaborate directly with traders on execution workflows.
- Take responsibility for systems that must operate reliably every trading day.
This role is a strong fit for an engineer who enjoys backend development, understands trading systems, and wants to solve demanding real-time infrastructure problems.
